Wildfires Consume the West
Forest Service Announces New Fire Management Strategy
In what has become an annual occurrence in the Western United States, millions of acres are once again on fire this summer, wreaking havoc on the landscape, threatening and destroying structures and private property, and significantly impacting watershed areas that are the source of water for municipal, industrial and agricultural users. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has responded by announcing a new strategy for managing catastrophic wildfires and the impacts of invasive species, drought, and insect and disease epidemics.
Provisions in the House version of the 2018 farm bill also would help to expedite salvage operations in response to catastrophic events, and remove hazardous trees and salvage timber.
