As Drought Worsens, Farmers and Water Purveyors Convene “Those in the Arena” Themed Conference

Alliance Meets with Regulators and Policymakers to Work Toward Solutions

(Reno, NV) – Channeling President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1910 speech on those “in the arena,” the Family Farm Alliance is gathering this week to raise their voice for workable solutions on the Western drought above the amplified voices of critics. Over 200 members of the Alliance are expected to join the conference. The Alliance is the largest organization representing Western irrigated agriculture, including farmers, ranchers, and water purveyors across 17 states.

Topics to be addressed include water infrastructure, the drought, technology and innovation, Alliance participation in the United Nation’s COP26 Climate Forum, the Biden Administration’s 30 x 30 initiative, and much more.

Participants at this year’s conference include:

  • Tanya Trujillo, Assistant Secretary for Water and Science, U.S. Department of the Interior

  • Camille Touton, Commissioner for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation

  • More Biden Administration officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture

  • AG Kawamura and Fred Yoder, Co-Chairs of Solutions from the Land

  • Senior congressional staff from key House and Senate offices and committees

  • Leaders from conservation, agriculture, and water associations

Family Farm Alliance President Patrick O’Toole, whose family owns and operates a sheep and cattle ranch on the Colorado-Wyoming border, said of the conference:

“This is the most important meeting of serious-minded experts who play a direct role in caring for the land and producing food for global consumers. With that essential responsibility we carry, irrigated agriculture faces some of the greatest challenges in generations. Between climate change, regulatory challenges, litigation and proposed congressional legislation, it’s vital that we come together to find solutions and make our voices heard.”

The Reno conference takes place at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino hotel on February 24 – 25. Last year the Alliance convened virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Family Farm Alliance’s mission is to ensure the availability of reliable and affordable irrigation water supplies to Western farmers and ranchers.
